Waterman Ski Area Rock Climbing

Park at the Waterman Ski Resort. Either take the easy way up left (if you're looking up the mountain) or walk straight up. As of 2025 there's a use trail going up the right slope. It's switchbacks a few times.

According to the Angeles Crest Scenic Byway Roadside Inventory, "Mt. Waterman Ski Area was founded in 1941 with a car below the road that furnished the rear axle to power a rope tow up to the road. If one knows where to look on the wide sweeping comeback beginners trail from the top of Chair #2 to the bottom of the chair, there is a large Jeffery pine on the north side of the run that has carved words in it, located on the south side. This dates back to about the turn of the twentieth century." Amazing information. I'm excited to look for that tree! "The Inventory" continues, "By 1950, there were nine private ski clubs with rope tows along Angeles Crest Hwy." Nine!? Wow.

"During the winter Bill Derr and I worked weekends at the Mount Waterman Ski Area. Although I enjoyed skiing, it was climbing that was on my mind. 1951 had been a big success; it gave me confidence and made me hungry for more - much more. Now I thought it was actually possible to be like that climber in the photograph in Ullman's book, High Conquest: bold skillful, and fearless. Now I had a vision of the future. When Mount Waterman closed in April, Bill and I said goodbye to skiing and hung up our boards. Bill took up many warm-weather activities, while I turned to climbing." Royal Robbins, "Fear Falling," page 25.
