Waterman Climbing near the 6,000' Gate

These are the climbs on Waterman that are best accessed from the 6,000' gate parking area. The 6,000' gate is often closed in the winter, making it the highest point you can drive to when it has been snowing. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)/Silver Moccasin Trail (NRT) crosses the Angeles Crest Highway just southwest of the turn out. Also, there is a bathroom here.
The approach trail is an old dirt road behind a locked gate on the north side of the parking lot. The old road switchbacks a gentle slope until a steep ridge. The ridge sucks. Instead of taking the old trail you can try your luck getting on the ridge directly from the parking lot, avoiding the old road all together. It's more direct, but it's steeper with less trail.
